During the second innings of the Melbourne Test, Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s controversial catch has ignited a heated debate on social media. The on-field umpire initially declared Jaiswal not out, but the third umpire, Bangladesh’s Sharfudoula Ibne Shahid, overturned the decision, ruling him out after observing a change in the ball’s trajectory.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma admitted, “To be honest, Jaiswal did make contact with the ball.” Former umpire Simon Taufel supported the third umpire’s decision, stating that the ball’s change in direction was evidence of contact with either the bat or gloves.
However, former Indian captain and commentator Sunil Gavaskar disagreed, calling it an optical illusion. Gavaskar suggested that the incident, which occurred in the last four minutes of the match, warrants further discussion between the umpire and match referee. He also raised concerns about the effectiveness of current technology in making such decisions.
This incident has divided fans on social media. While some believe the third umpire made the correct call, others argue the decision was flawed and unfair to Jaiswal.
In the match, Australia defeated India by 184 runs, securing a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. Chasing a target of 340 runs, India managed only 155 runs before being bowled out. Australia had set the tone with a massive first-innings score of 474, while India replied with 369 runs. In their second innings, Australia posted 234 runs, giving India a challenging target.
The final Test of the series is scheduled to begin on January 3 in Sydney, where India will aim to level the series and keep their championship hopes alive.
