For the first time in Syria’s history, a woman has been appointed to a key position of leadership at the Central Bank. Maysa Sabreen has been named the interim governor of the Syrian Central Bank, marking a significant milestone as the first woman to hold this role in the country.
Sabreen has a distinguished career in finance. Since December 2018, she has been a member of the Board of Directors at the Damascus Securities Exchange, representing the Central Bank. She has also served as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank and headed its Office Control Division. With a master’s degree in accounting, her qualifications and experience make her well-suited for this challenging role.
This appointment is part of a broader effort by Syria’s new administration to include women in key decision-making positions. Sabreen is the second notable female appointee under the leadership of Ahmed Al-Sharaa. Earlier, Ayesha Al-Deebs was appointed as head of the Women’s Affairs Office in the interim government.
These developments come after significant political changes in Syria. The Ba’ath Party’s decades-long rule, which began in 1963, came to an end following swift military offensives by opposition forces. Syrian leader Bashar Al-Assad fled to Russia after losing control of Damascus on December 8, effectively ending his 25-year leadership.
Sabreen’s appointment is seen as a symbol of change and progress in the country. It reflects a growing recognition of women’s capabilities in leadership roles, even amidst the challenges Syria continues to face. This historic step could pave the way for greater gender equality in Syria’s governance and inspire more women to take up leadership positions in various sectors.
Her leadership at the Central Bank comes at a critical time, with Syria undergoing significant economic and political shifts. Observers hope that her expertise will help stabilize the financial system and contribute to the country’s broader recovery efforts.
This landmark decision signals a new chapter for Syria, emphasizing inclusivity and a commitment to empowering women in shaping the nation’s future.
