Sugar prices in Lahore have been rising steadily despite ongoing crushing, which is typically a time when sugar production is at its peak. In just a few days, the price of sugar has surged by an alarming 18 rupees per kilo, causing concern among consumers and market analysts alike. This continuous price hike has been making headlines, as it adds more financial strain on households.
As of the latest data, the ex-mill price of sugar has increased from 125 rupees per kilo in December to a range of 140 to 143 rupees. This sudden jump in price has left many puzzled, as it is unusual for sugar prices to rise this sharply during the crushing season when more sugar is produced.
The Dealers Association has further revealed that for the month of February, the future trade price has been set at 145 rupees per kilo. On the retail front, small shops have begun selling sugar for as high as 150 rupees per kilo, further inflating the burden on everyday consumers. This steady increase in the cost of sugar is affecting not just businesses, but also families who rely on affordable sugar prices for daily use.
A major concern raised by the Dealers Association is the artificial shortage caused by sugar exports. According to them, the export of sugar is being manipulated to create a scarcity in the local market, which in turn drives up the prices. Without controlling this practice, they warn that sugar prices could continue to rise, with projections suggesting that during Ramadan, the price could reach as high as 170 rupees per kilo.
The rising cost of sugar has created significant frustration for people across the country. The price hike is being attributed to a combination of factors, including market manipulation and export policies that are creating an imbalance in supply and demand. The general public is urging the government to take action and regulate these price increases before they escalate further, especially with Ramadan approaching, a time when sugar consumption typically spikes due to increased demand for sweets and desserts.
