Saudi Arabia is bracing for a wave of extreme cold weather, as predicted by the National Center of Meteorology (NMC). The forecast indicates that temperatures will drop significantly in several regions, with cities like Madinah, Tabuk, and Al-Jouf expected to experience some of the coldest weather in the kingdom.
The NMC has announced that during the ongoing mid-winter school break, northern areas such as Tabuk, Al-Jouf, and the Northern Borders are likely to witness snowfall. This rare occurrence in Saudi Arabia is expected to draw significant attention, especially from residents and visitors in these regions.
Many areas across the country, including Tabuk, Makkah, Madinah, Al-Jouf, Northern Borders, Hail, Al-Qassim, Riyadh, Eastern Province, and Al-Baha, are forecasted to experience moderate to heavy rainfall. Along with the rain, strong dust-raising winds are expected to affect visibility and travel conditions.
The weather center highlighted historical data, noting that the coldest weather ever recorded in Saudi Arabia occurred in January 1992, when the temperature dropped to -9.3 degrees Celsius at the NMC’s Hail station. During that period, the average temperature in some areas remained around -4.4 degrees Celsius for a week. These extreme cold waves have primarily affected central stations such as Hail and Al-Qurayyat, which recorded the lowest January temperatures between 1985 and 2023.
Residents across the kingdom are advised to prepare for the cold weather by ensuring they have adequate heating and winter supplies. Travelers are encouraged to check weather updates and exercise caution, especially in areas prone to heavy snowfall and strong winds. The NMC continues to monitor weather conditions and will provide timely updates to keep the public informed.
This rare and extreme weather pattern serves as a reminder of the diverse climate experienced in Saudi Arabia, where both scorching summers and freezing winters leave their mark.
