With the ICC Champions Trophy just around the corner, set to kick off in Pakistan and the UAE next month, questions are swirling about whether Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma will attend the traditional pre-tournament captains’ meeting in Karachi. This event, a hallmark of ICC tournaments, brings together captains from all participating teams before the tournament officially begins.
The meeting is scheduled for February 16 or 17 in Karachi, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to confirm Sharma’s attendance. Newly-appointed BCCI Secretary Devjeet Saikia stated that no decision has been made on whether Sharma will travel to Pakistan. Adding to the uncertainty, it remains unclear whether the Indian government’s permission is required for such a visit.
This hesitation is set against a backdrop of strained political relations between India and Pakistan, with no bilateral cricket series held between the two nations since 2012. Although there has been no recent instance of an Indian player visiting Pakistan, some progress was seen in 2023 when BCCI officials Roger Binny and Rajiv Shukla attended an official dinner in Lahore during the Asia Cup. This marked a rare moment of high-level Indian representation in Pakistan.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has formally requested the ICC to ensure that all team captains participate in pre-tournament events, including the photoshoot and opening ceremony. However, the ICC has not yet finalized logistics, including travel arrangements for the teams.
Interestingly, the ICC took a different approach for the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA, where they skipped the traditional captains’ meeting and launched the tournament through a high-tech projection event in New York City. Whether a similar alternative will be considered for the Champions Trophy remains to be seen.
The Champions Trophy, starting on February 19, will feature matches in three Pakistani cities—Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi—as well as in Dubai, UAE. India’s group-stage matches and a potential semi-final or final will all take place in Dubai, minimizing their need to travel to Pakistan.
The tournament promises intense competition and excitement, but the ongoing political tension between India and Pakistan has added another layer of intrigue to the buildup. Cricket fans around the world are keenly watching for updates on whether Rohit Sharma will break the pattern and make the trip to Karachi, setting the stage for a memorable tournament.
