Rashid Latif, former captain of Pakistan’s national cricket team, has shared valuable advice for Pakistan as the country prepares to host the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. As the tournament draws closer, Latif emphasizes the need for Pakistan to adopt a bold and aggressive approach on the field, especially given that they will be playing on their home turf.
In a recent interview, Rashid expressed his confidence in Pakistan’s ability to defend their title. He believes that the team should focus on playing attacking cricket and take full advantage of the home conditions. Hosting the Champions Trophy in Pakistan is a significant event, and Latif is hopeful that the excitement and support from the nation will inspire the team to perform at its best.
“These are exciting times for a cricket-loving country like Pakistan. With the world’s best teams coming to compete in this prestigious tournament, the atmosphere will be electric,” Latif said. He also praised the efforts of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Pakistani government for ensuring the tournament will take place in the country. While India’s matches will be held in the UAE due to ongoing political tensions, Latif stressed that Pakistan should only focus on their own game and not be distracted by external factors.
Latif also highlighted one of Pakistan’s main strengths for the tournament – their talented spin-bowling lineup. He pointed to players like Abrar Ahmed, Sufiyan Muqeem, Faisal Akram, and Salman Ali Agha, who could shine in the home conditions and play a key role in helping Pakistan retain their title. “I am confident our bowlers will perform well in front of their home crowd,” Latif added.
However, Latif did express concerns about Pakistan’s opening combination. With Saim Ayub injured and Abdullah Shafique struggling with his form, finding a stable opening pair is a challenge for the team. Latif admitted that this is a key issue the selectors will need to address before the tournament begins.
“There is uncertainty over the opening positions, but if Fakhar Zaman recovers from his injury, he could partner with Shan Masood at the top,” Latif noted. Fakhar Zaman, known for his explosive batting, will be crucial if he returns to full fitness.
Looking ahead to the Champions Trophy, Latif identified several teams as tough opponents for Pakistan. While India is always a strong team, he pointed out that England, New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa could be the biggest challenges for Pakistan in this tournament. “India is a tough team, but I believe these four teams will be even harder to beat,” Latif said.
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be held from February 19 to March 9, with matches taking place in four cities: Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Dubai. The eight teams are divided into two groups:
- Group A: Pakistan, India, New Zealand, Bangladesh
- Group B: Afghanistan, South Africa, England, Australia
Pakistan will face New Zealand in the tournament opener on February 19 in Karachi. The highly anticipated match between Pakistan and India is set for February 23 in Dubai, which is expected to draw huge crowds and generate a lot of excitement.
In conclusion, Rashid Latif’s advice to the Pakistani team is clear: play aggressively, focus on your strengths, and embrace the home advantage. The whole country will be behind the team, cheering them on as they aim to retain their Champions Trophy title in 2025.
