After nearly two decades, cricket fans in Peshawar are finally getting a chance to witness top-level matches as the Pakistan Super League (PSL) returns to the city. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially confirmed that two matches of PSL 10 will take place at the newly renovated Arbab Niaz Stadium, marking a historic comeback for international-level cricket in the region.
The last time an international match was held in Peshawar was in 2006, when Pakistan played against India. Since then, the city has been waiting for the return of high-profile cricket events. Thanks to continuous efforts by Peshawar Zalmi and the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government, the PCB has now approved hosting PSL matches in Peshawar.
Due to the ongoing renovation work and the absence of floodlights, both matches at Arbab Niaz Stadium will be played during the daytime. However, the excitement among fans remains high as they prepare to welcome their favorite teams back to their home ground.
Additionally, the International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy will also be arriving in Peshawar on Thursday. The trophy will be displayed at the iconic Arbab Niaz Stadium, further adding to the excitement of cricket enthusiasts in the region.
The provincial government has played a significant role in reviving cricket in Peshawar. Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Syed Fakhar Jahan, recently announced that the stadium’s construction would be completed by February 15. During his visit to the venue, he assured that all necessary arrangements were being made to ensure that PSL matches could be hosted smoothly in the city.
Former Test cricketer and Peshawar Zalmi’s Director, Mohammad Akram, along with other officials including Director General of Sports Abdul Nasir and Arbab Niaz Stadium’s Director Saleem Raza, accompanied the minister during the visit. They emphasized that construction work was being carried out in double shifts to ensure timely completion.
The minister also expressed confidence that Peshawar would host more PSL matches in the coming years. He assured that financial constraints would not be a problem in completing the stadium’s renovation. He further highlighted that security concerns were no longer an issue, as the province had successfully hosted multiple national sports events, including a marathon featuring athletes from across the country.
The revival of cricket in Peshawar is a significant achievement for the city’s passionate cricket fans. The return of PSL matches and the arrival of the Champions Trophy reflect the growing confidence in Peshawar’s ability to host major sporting events. With the completion of the Arbab Niaz Stadium, the city is set to become a key venue for cricket in Pakistan, bringing more excitement and opportunities for local players and fans alike.
