A recent smuggling incident at Multan airport has brought unwanted attention to Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) after five crew members were caught attempting to smuggle iPhones. The shocking discovery was made on flight PK-222, which had arrived from Dubai.
Customs officials intercepted two female flight attendants carrying 24 concealed iPhones. During questioning, the air hostesses revealed that several male colleagues were also involved in the operation. This led to the recovery of an additional 54 iPhones, bringing the total to 78 devices.
PIA management has stated that strict disciplinary actions will be taken against the involved staff members. This case raises serious concerns about the security measures at airports and the integrity of airline crew members.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time PIA staff has been linked to smuggling activities. In a similar incident last October at Lahore’s international airport, customs officials intercepted mobile phones worth over Rs. 16.7 million. Among those arrested was Nadia Batool, a PIA air hostess on flight PK-204 from Dubai, who was caught with 30 concealed iPhones valued at Rs. 11.2 million. In the same crackdown, two passengers, Muhammad Arshad and Fariha Amin, were caught smuggling phones worth Rs. 5.5 million in their luggage.
The repeated involvement of PIA crew members in smuggling operations not only damages the airline’s reputation but also highlights a growing issue that needs immediate attention. PIA, already facing challenges in a competitive aviation industry, must ensure tighter security protocols and stricter oversight to prevent such incidents in the future.
These cases of coordinated smuggling within airline crews are alarming and demand robust measures to safeguard both the airline’s credibility and the security of the nation’s airports.
