Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Khurram Mushtaq, has made a significant announcement regarding the airline’s plans for 2025. In a bid to revitalize the struggling national carrier, Mushtaq outlined a comprehensive strategy to bring several grounded aircraft back into active operations, boosting the operational capacity and financial health of PIA.
The acting CEO revealed that out of a total fleet of 34 aircraft, only 16 were operational when the initiative began. However, in a remarkable turnaround, the PIA team has already activated three additional aircraft in just three weeks. This includes a Boeing 777, an Airbus 320, and an ATR aircraft, bringing the total number of operational planes to 19. The ambitious plan aims to further increase the active fleet to 24 aircraft within the next six months and eventually activate all 34 planes by the end of the year.
This restoration effort is not just about numbers; it represents a focused approach to expanding the airline’s reach and services. The newly activated Boeing 777 aircraft are expected to be deployed for international operations, including flights to European destinations, enhancing PIA’s global footprint. Preparations for the 2025 Hajj operations are also being expedited, ensuring that PIA meets the high demand during this crucial period.
In addition to operational improvements, the airline has introduced a 25% salary increase for its employees, reflecting a commitment to staff welfare and motivation. This decision comes amidst challenging economic conditions in Pakistan, showcasing the government and management’s determination to drive PIA toward progress.
Last year, PIA added two new aircraft to its operational fleet, a significant step forward despite financial constraints. A recently acquired Airbus 320 was promptly incorporated into the schedule and successfully completed its first commercial flight from Islamabad to Karachi, further underscoring the airline’s dedication to growth.
PIA spokesperson Abdullah Hafeez Khan highlighted the government’s supportive role in the airline’s progress. He emphasized that, despite the difficult economic situation, measures are being taken to strengthen PIA’s fleet and operations. These efforts are expected to significantly boost revenue and enhance the airline’s reputation both domestically and internationally.
The revival of grounded aircraft and strategic improvements in operations mark a pivotal moment for PIA. With an expanded fleet and enhanced services, the airline aims to regain its stature as a reliable and competitive carrier in the global aviation industry. These developments promise a brighter future for PIA and its passengers, setting the stage for a successful 2025 and beyond.
