Pakistan has taken a significant step toward promoting green energy by seeking Sweden’s support to convert petrol-powered motorcycles into electric vehicles (EVs). This initiative aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and promote sustainable energy solutions. Federal Minister for Power, Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, shared this proposal during a meeting with the Swedish Ambassador to Pakistan, Alexandra Berg Von Linde.
The minister emphasized the need for technical and financial assistance from Sweden and the EU Green Fund to help implement this vision. He proposed offering interest-free loans through Pakistan’s banking system to enable this transformation. Highlighting the potential, he mentioned that Pakistan currently has over 30 million motorcycles, a significant segment of vehicles that could benefit from electrification. He also pointed out that people in this income group have a strong track record of repaying loans, making the proposal feasible and practical.
In his discussion, the minister highlighted Pakistan’s dedication to renewable energy. Last year, renewable energy accounted for 55% of the country’s power generation, showcasing its efforts toward cleaner and sustainable energy. Pakistan is also revising its Indicative Generation Capacity Expansion Plan (IGCEP) to ensure that energy resources are optimized for maximum economic impact and integrated into the national grid in a cost-effective way. These steps reflect the government’s strong commitment to reducing the country’s carbon footprint and providing affordable electricity to its people.

The Swedish Ambassador, Alexandra Berg Von Linde, welcomed the proposal and reiterated Sweden’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s renewable energy goals. She emphasized that Sweden is a global leader in renewable energy, with 70% of its energy generated from sustainable sources. This demonstrates how economic growth and environmental sustainability can go hand in hand.
The ambassador also noted that Swedish companies operating in Pakistan are keen on reliable green energy solutions. She mentioned that these efforts would not only benefit the automotive sector but also boost Pakistan’s textile exports to the EU by making them more globally competitive through renewable and sustainable energy practices.
The collaboration comes as part of the long-standing ties between Pakistan and Sweden. Celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations, both nations are now focusing on building stronger partnerships in the renewable energy sector to address global challenges like climate change. Sweden’s expertise in green technology could play a pivotal role in helping Pakistan achieve its goal of promoting electric vehicles and sustainable energy.
This initiative reflects Pakistan’s vision to create a cleaner, greener future while strengthening its economy through international cooperation. By partnering with Sweden, Pakistan is moving closer to achieving its energy goals and ensuring a brighter, more sustainable future for its people.
