In a major step toward eliminating polio from Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched the first anti-polio campaign of 2025. This initiative is aimed at completely eradicating the deadly poliovirus that has affected countless children over the years. The launch event took place in Islamabad, where the Prime Minister personally administered polio drops to young children, marking the start of a nationwide effort.
The primary objective of this campaign is to vaccinate millions of children across Pakistan, ensuring that every child under the age of five receives the necessary polio drops. With a determined focus on ending polio, the government is making significant efforts to reach every household, even in the most remote corners of the country.
In his speech at the event, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the commitment of Pakistan to rid the country of polio. He also highlighted the ongoing cooperation with international partners, particularly in neighboring Afghanistan, to eliminate the virus from the region entirely. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the global partners such as the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and Saudi Arabia for their continued support in combating the virus and other life-threatening diseases.
Ayesha Raza Farooq, the Prime Minister’s Focal Person on Polio Eradication, spoke about the massive scale of the campaign. She shared that over 400,000 polio workers, including more than 225,000 women vaccinators, would be going door-to-door to vaccinate children across the country. This team will work tirelessly for the next seven days to ensure that no child is left behind.
Ayesha also appealed to parents to open their doors to the polio workers, as these dedicated individuals will visit homes to deliver the vital vaccine. She stressed the importance of this vaccination in preventing polio and other dangerous diseases that can have lifelong impacts on children.
The success of this campaign depends on the support of every community member. By participating in this effort, Pakistan aims to protect future generations from the devastating effects of polio, ensuring a healthier and stronger nation for years to come.
With the government, international organizations, and local communities working together, Pakistan is making significant progress toward a polio-free future. This campaign not only serves as a symbol of hope for the country’s children but also represents a global effort to eliminate polio from the world.
