Pakistan has taken a huge step towards digital transformation by introducing its first-ever digital identity card. The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) recently announced this groundbreaking initiative as part of its 25th-anniversary celebrations.
With this new digital ID, citizens will no longer need to carry physical identity cards. Instead, they can store their IDs safely on their smartphones using the Pak ID mobile app. This digital system will make identity verification easier, faster, and more secure. A digital authentication system is also being developed, allowing people to verify their identity instantly for different services.
A Step Towards a Digital Future
The government is launching the digital ID system under the World Bank-supported Digital Economy Project. The pilot phase will start on August 14, 2025, Pakistan’s Independence Day. Officials believe this system will revolutionize identity management and help bring Pakistan closer to a fully digital future.
During a special ceremony at NADRA headquarters, government officials and key dignitaries gathered to celebrate the launch. Federal Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi called this initiative a historic milestone, emphasizing that digital identity will improve efficiency in many sectors, including banking, travel, and government services.
Special Tributes to NADRA’s Achievements
To honor NADRA’s 25 years of service, the State Bank of Pakistan issued a special commemorative coin, and Pakistan Post launched a special postage stamp. A documentary was also shown, highlighting NADRA’s achievements in digital identity management.
NADRA has played a crucial role in helping citizens access identity services, especially in remote areas. The agency has also worked closely with law enforcement agencies to enhance security and combat fraud. Officials encouraged citizens to cancel ID cards of deceased relatives to ensure accurate records and maintain a reliable database.
A New Era of Convenience and Security
This digital ID system will make life easier for millions of Pakistanis by eliminating the need to carry physical cards. With enhanced security features, quick verification options, and easy access through mobile phones, this initiative will contribute to a smarter and more efficient Pakistan.
As the country moves toward a digital economy, this initiative marks the beginning of a new era where identity management is seamless, secure, and hassle-free.Re
