On January 3, 2025, Pakistan proudly began its eighth term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The occasion was marked by a special ceremony at the UN Headquarters in New York, where Pakistan’s national flag was raised in front of the UNSC chamber. This flag-raising ceremony symbolizes Pakistan’s ongoing commitment to international peace and security.
Pakistan is joining Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia as the newest non-permanent members of the UNSC. These countries took over the seats from Japan, Ecuador, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland, whose terms ended on December 31, 2024. The ceremony, which took place at the UNSC’s stakeout area, involved the installation of flags for all five new members. Pakistan’s Alternate Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, had the honor of installing Pakistan’s flag during this impressive event.
Ambassador Ahmad delivered a brief speech during the ceremony, emphasizing Pakistan’s dedication to the core values of the UN Charter. He stated that Pakistan would continue to work towards maintaining international peace and security while promoting friendly relations among nations. He also highlighted the importance of equal rights and the right of people to self-determination. Pakistan’s commitment to these principles was reaffirmed, particularly for those nations under foreign occupation and oppression.
Ambassador Ahmad also expressed Pakistan’s belief in the power of cooperative multilateralism, with the UN playing a central role in addressing global challenges. He stressed the need for dialogue and diplomacy to address long-standing and emerging conflicts around the world. According to the Pakistani envoy, the priority should be to reduce tensions, prevent arms races, and create an environment that fosters peace, stability, and development.
As part of its duties, Pakistan will also take on the responsibility of presiding over the UNSC in July 2025. The presidency of the UNSC rotates alphabetically among its 15 members, and Pakistan will be in charge for that month. This will allow Pakistan to set the agenda for the Security Council, shaping the discussions and decisions that will impact global peace and security.
The United Nations Security Council consists of 15 members, five of which are permanent members: Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States. The remaining 10 seats are held by non-permanent members, with five of them being replaced each year. These non-permanent members are selected based on geographical regions, ensuring that a diverse set of countries has a chance to contribute to the work of the Council.
Pakistan’s role as a non-permanent member of the UNSC reflects its ongoing commitment to playing an active part in addressing global issues. By joining Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia, Pakistan will continue to strengthen its diplomatic efforts to promote peace, security, and development across the world.
Through this new term, Pakistan aims to be a strong voice for justice, self-determination, and the resolution of conflicts. As the world faces numerous challenges, Pakistan remains dedicated to using its position on the UNSC to advocate for positive change and global cooperation.
