Pakistan has taken a new step in exports by launching its first donkey meat processing plant in Gwadar. This facility is set to meet China’s growing demand for donkey meat, bones, and hides. These parts are especially valued in making e-jiao, a traditional Chinese medicine.
Officials from the Ministry of National Food Security and Research have confirmed that a Chinese company has started operations. This marks a significant move in a unique export sector. The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Food Security stated that sending processed donkey carcasses is more practical than exporting live animals.
Pakistan currently has a donkey population of 5.9 million, and now, with finalized protocols, exports to China have become possible. This new development is expected to create economic opportunities and strengthen trade relations between Pakistan and China. The export of donkey products could also provide a new source of income for farmers and businesses involved in livestock.
By focusing on processed exports rather than live animals, Pakistan ensures a more structured and profitable trade. The demand for donkey hides and meat in China continues to rise, making this a promising sector for expansion. This move could boost Pakistan’s economy and open doors for further exports in animal-based products.
