New Zealand has announced exciting changes to its visitor visa rules, making it easier for digital nomads—people who work remotely while traveling—to enjoy an extended stay in the country. Starting today, tourists with visitor visas can legally work remotely for foreign employers during their stay in New Zealand. This decision is part of the government’s effort to boost the economy and attract more international visitors.
Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis shared that tourism is the country’s second-largest export earner, generating close to $11 billion annually and providing nearly 200,000 jobs. She explained that encouraging digital nomads to visit and work remotely will make New Zealand even more appealing as a destination, bringing in additional revenue and creating new opportunities for the tourism industry.
Immigration Minister Erica Stanford emphasized that this update reflects the realities of today’s flexible work culture. She mentioned that allowing tourists to work remotely while on a holiday gives visitors the chance to extend their stays, leading to more spending in the local economy. However, she also advised visitors working remotely for longer than 90 days to consider potential tax implications.
Tourism Minister Louise Upston highlighted that digital nomad visas are gaining popularity worldwide as remote work continues to grow. She noted that New Zealand must keep up with these trends to stay competitive. International remote workers, she said, tend to spend more time and money in the country compared to regular tourists, particularly during off-peak seasons.
The new rules apply to all visitor visa categories, including tourists, those visiting family, and partners or guardians on long-term visas. However, only remote work for overseas-based companies is permitted. Visitors working in roles that require them to be physically present in New Zealand, such as performers or sales representatives, will still need specific work visas.
This forward-thinking decision is expected to attract a new wave of international visitors who are eager to experience New Zealand’s breathtaking landscapes, unique culture, and high quality of life—all while continuing their professional work remotely. It positions New Zealand as one of the top destinations for remote workers looking for a perfect blend of work and leisure.
Whether it’s exploring the stunning Fiordland, enjoying the vibrant city life in Auckland, or embracing the laid-back charm of smaller towns, digital nomads now have an incredible opportunity to immerse themselves in everything New Zealand has to offer while staying productive.
