The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has announced a new requirement for couples to take mandatory blood tests before marriage. This step is aimed at preventing the spread of genetic and infectious diseases, ensuring a healthier future for families.
Government Seeks More Time for Implementation
Authorities have requested a two-month extension to fully implement this policy. The updated marriage certificate (Nikahnama) will now include test results for several serious health conditions. These tests will help in the early detection of diseases like thalassemia, Hepatitis, and AIDS, protecting future generations from potential health risks.
A case regarding this initiative was presented in the Peshawar High Court, and further hearings have been postponed until May 25. The court has asked the provincial government to submit a detailed report on the implementation process.
Why Are These Tests Important?
Health experts believe that mandatory blood tests can help prevent the spread of hereditary and infectious diseases. In Pakistan, nearly seven percent of the population is affected by blood disorders, mainly due to marriages within families. By introducing pre-marriage screening, the government aims to reduce the risk of passing genetic diseases to children.
Authorities Preparing for Nationwide Implementation
To ensure the smooth execution of this new rule, the government has informed all marriage registrars and relevant officials about the policy. Training sessions will be conducted to help them understand the updated procedures.
Although the new Nikahnama form is ready, officials believe it will take an additional two months to distribute it across the province. Once implemented, this regulation will make it mandatory for all couples to undergo blood screening before receiving a marriage certificate.
A Step Toward a Healthier Society
The initiative has been welcomed by many health experts and activists who believe it will create awareness about genetic and infectious diseases. Early detection can lead to better medical guidance and treatment options, reducing health complications for future generations.
This new rule represents a significant move towards a healthier society, ensuring that couples are aware of potential health risks before starting a family.
