Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, known as Aga Khan IV, has passed away at the age of 88 in Lisbon, Portugal, on February 4, 2025. His family was by his side at the time of his death, and his foundation confirmed the sad news through social media. Aga Khan IV was not only the spiritual leader of millions of Ismaili Muslims around the world but also a prominent figure in global development, working to improve the lives of countless people through his charitable work.
As the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Aga Khan IV led his community with wisdom and compassion. His death has left a great void in the hearts of his followers, and his successor has yet to be named.
In addition to his religious role, the Aga Khan was a visionary philanthropist and the founder of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a global organization that works to promote development in various parts of the world, particularly in Asia and Africa. Under his leadership, the AKDN grew to employ more than 96,000 people and made a significant impact in fields like healthcare, education, and economic development. His work continues to improve the lives of people in some of the world’s most underserved regions.

The Aga Khan’s passing has been met with tributes from world leaders and influential figures. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called him “a symbol of peace, tolerance, and compassion in our troubled world.” Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai also honored his remarkable contributions, especially his dedication to improving education, healthcare, and development across the globe.
Born in Geneva, Switzerland, Aga Khan IV spent his early years in Kenya before becoming the Imam of the Ismaili community in 1957. He took on this important role following the death of his grandfather, and during his leadership, he guided his followers through many challenges. Interestingly, his father was not chosen to be the Imam due to his marriage to the famous Hollywood actress Rita Hayworth, a decision that played a role in shaping the community’s leadership.
Although he was known for his philanthropic efforts, the Aga Khan had other passions as well. He was an avid lover of horse racing and continued his family’s long tradition of breeding thoroughbred horses. As a billionaire, he owned luxury yachts and private jets but chose to use much of his wealth to support humanitarian projects around the world. His commitment to helping others was also recognized when he was granted honorary Canadian citizenship.
Aga Khan IV held British and Portuguese citizenship, and he established a leadership base for the Ismaili community in Lisbon, which is home to a large number of Ismaili Muslims. His influence extended well beyond religious matters. He was known for his cautious approach to political and religious issues, especially in the Middle East. In a 2017 interview, he emphasized that Islam is a faith focused on peace, and he criticized the use of religion to fuel political conflicts.
With the passing of such a prominent figure, the legacy of Aga Khan IV will endure through the countless lives he touched. His commitment to peace, education, and humanitarian efforts has made the world a better place, and his leadership will continue to inspire future generations.
