A new bike lane on Lahore’s Ferozepur Road has become a hot topic for motorcyclists. While the project was launched to ensure safer travel, many riders are now raising concerns about its design and potential safety hazards. The lane, stretching from the Muslim Town Bridge to the Lahore Bridge near Arfa Kareem Tower, has sparked debate due to its layout and impact on traffic flow.
The initiative, introduced under the guidance of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, aims to create a safer environment for bikers. However, several issues have been reported by riders. One major problem is the presence of dangerous gaps and openings along the lane. These gaps allow vehicles to enter the bike lane and make it easier for motorcyclists to switch lanes, which could lead to serious accidents.
The situation is particularly risky at the Kalma Chowk flyover, where the bike lane narrows the road from four lanes to three, and at certain points, down to just two lanes. The bottleneck effect is causing significant disruptions in traffic flow, especially during rush hours. Riders have also expressed concern about the gaps at the start and end of the flyover, which increase the risk of collisions as motorcyclists exit near the Model Town underpass.
To address these concerns, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has installed one-foot-high dividers to separate the bike lane from the main road. Additionally, orange markings have been added to crossings to alert bikers to slow down. LDA Director General Tahir Farooq defended the project, explaining that the openings in the bike lane are only in areas deemed necessary. He assured that the lane would help reduce traffic congestion and minimize accidents in the long run.
While the intentions behind the project are admirable, the design flaws need urgent attention. A safer and more practical solution is crucial to ensure the bike lane serves its purpose without compromising the safety of motorcyclists or creating unnecessary traffic problems for other road users. Feedback from motorcyclists and traffic experts should be prioritized to make necessary adjustments and improvements to the lane.
This new initiative highlights the importance of proper planning and execution when implementing infrastructure projects aimed at public safety. If addressed properly, the bike lane could become a significant step toward safer travel for motorcyclists in Lahore.
