The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government is planning big improvements to Peshawar’s transportation system. A special committee, led by Excise Minister Khaliqur Rehman and Peshawar Division Commissioner Riaz Khan Mehsud, has proposed extending the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service to help reduce traffic jams in the city.
The plan includes extending the BRT to Khyber and Warsak roads, which are often congested. Another extension is suggested from Ring Road to Kohat Road through GT Road, a critical route for daily commuters. These changes aim to improve traffic flow and make traveling easier for residents, reducing pressure on the city’s busy roads.
In addition to these expansions, the KP Transport Department is introducing digital upgrades to modernize its services. The department plans to launch a mobile app called “Dastak,” which will allow people to apply for driving licenses online. This app eliminates the need for middlemen, helping to prevent fake licenses and fraudulent medical certifications.
Special discounts will be available for overseas Pakistanis through this new system. These changes are part of a larger modernization plan under an agreement with the KP Information Technology Board (KPITB). The driving license system is expected to be fully operational within four months, while the entire transport department will be digitized in about 18 months.
Once implemented, these initiatives are expected to make public services more efficient, reduce traffic issues, and improve urban mobility in Peshawar. The changes will not only benefit commuters but also boost the province’s revenue and overall public satisfaction.
