Karachi’s Mayor, Murtaza Wahab, has introduced a new helpline to help people report open manholes in the city. This service is part of an effort to protect citizens from the dangers caused by manholes without covers, which have been a serious issue in Karachi.
Many people, including children, have suffered due to open manholes in the past. On January 5, 2024, a tragic incident occurred when an 8-year-old boy fell into an open manhole in Shah Faisal Colony and lost his life. This incident has brought a lot of attention to the problem of manholes in the city.
To solve this, the mayor launched a special hotline number, 1334. Now, Karachi residents can quickly call this number to report any open manholes they find. Mayor Wahab promised that the Karachi Water Corporation would take immediate action to fix the problem.
The mayor also made it clear that they will continue to provide as many manhole covers as needed to make sure everyone stays safe. In fact, last year alone, 71,000 manhole covers were installed in different areas of the city. This effort aims to reduce the number of open manholes and prevent any more accidents.
Mayor Wahab has assured the public that citizens should no longer wait for someone to address the issue. If anyone sees an open manhole, they can now call 1334 and expect quick action. Keeping the people of Karachi safe is his top priority.
This new helpline is a welcome step toward making the city safer for everyone. Residents now have a reliable way to report issues and get help immediately. This initiative will help prevent future accidents and make Karachi a safer place for all.
