Karachi woke up to one of its coldest mornings this winter as the temperature plunged to 9.8°C, making Sunday a noticeably chilly day for residents. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that the cold is expected to intensify further, with Monday’s minimum temperature predicted to drop to 9°C.
This significant dip in temperatures has brought a sharper bite to the winter season. Northeastern winds blowing at speeds of 5 to 20 km/h are adding to the chill, and mild fog has reduced visibility to just 3 kilometers in the city. Karachi’s weather is expected to stay cold and dry over the next 24 hours, with daytime temperatures reaching a maximum of 28°C while nights remain freezing.
On Saturday, the minimum temperature was recorded at 12°C, showing a dramatic overnight decline to 9.8°C on Sunday morning. This drop is part of a broader cold spell affecting the region, with the PMD’s Early Warning Centre advising that cooler conditions are likely to persist throughout the week. Stronger winds could further contribute to the chilly mornings and evenings, making it essential for residents to take precautions.
In the last 24 hours, cold and dry weather has been reported across Pakistan, with dense fog affecting visibility in Punjab. Meanwhile, isolated rain of 1mm was recorded in Mirpurkhas, adding a touch of moisture to the crisp air. The country’s coldest spots on Saturday included Leh at -13°C, Parachinar at -12°C, Astore at -11°C, and Skardu at -9°C, among others.
The PMD also mentioned that a shallow westerly wave has been influencing the weather, bringing rain and colder temperatures to the eastern and upper regions of Pakistan. Karachiites are urged to dress warmly, particularly during the early morning and evening hours, to stay safe from the intensified winter chill.
