Karachi has seen a shocking rise in dog bite incidents, with more than 10,000 cases reported in just the first two months of 2025. This sharp increase has sparked major concerns about public safety and the growing population of stray dogs in the city.
According to official records, Civil Hospital Karachi alone reported 5,795 dog bite cases between January and February this year, a big jump from the 3,269 cases recorded during the same period in 2024. Similarly, Jinnah Hospital treated over 5,000 dog bite patients in the first two months of 2025, compared to just over 3,000 cases last year.
Health experts strongly advise immediate first aid for anyone bitten by a dog. The best way to prevent infection is to wash the wound with detergent soap for at least 15 minutes. Additionally, getting the full course of the anti-rabies vaccine is crucial to avoid serious health risks.
Apart from dog bites, Civil Hospital Karachi also recorded 13 cases of cat bites in February. Medical professionals warn that rabies is not limited to dogs. It can also spread through bites from other animals, including cats, donkeys, and even monkeys.
With the rising number of such cases, authorities and citizens must work together to address this issue. Controlling the stray dog population, raising awareness about rabies, and ensuring access to vaccines are some of the key steps needed to protect public health.
If you or anyone you know is bitten by a dog or any other animal, seek medical attention immediately to prevent infection and serious health complications.
