The Israeli military has destroyed Gaza’s only water desalination plant in northern Gaza, leaving Palestinians in dire need of clean drinking water. According to the Palestinian Water Authority, the plant was critical in meeting water needs for northern Gaza. Its destruction has caused immense hardship for the residents of the area.
The damage to the desalination plant has created enormous challenges for technical teams trying to access the site. They are dealing with widespread destruction of roads and infrastructure, along with a severe shortage of equipment and fuel needed for repairs. Initial assessments reveal that the plant’s electrical and electromechanical components across various operational units have been severely damaged.
The attack has also led to the complete destruction of several vital parts of the facility. This includes five seawater supply wells, the plant’s intake pipeline, two power generators, a pump, and the return water pipeline. Additionally, the outer fencing and output pumps of the plant have been ruined, rendering the facility inoperable.
The plant played a vital role in supplying clean water to the northern and western neighborhoods of Gaza City. Its destruction is part of a broader effort to systematically damage Gaza’s water infrastructure, further worsening the humanitarian crisis in the region.
The lack of clean drinking water is now a critical issue for the people of Gaza, who are already enduring harsh living conditions under a prolonged blockade. Access to water is a basic human right, and the destruction of this facility highlights the ongoing struggles faced by Palestinians.
Efforts to repair and restore the plant are underway, but the challenges are immense due to limited resources, damaged infrastructure, and ongoing hostilities. This incident underscores the urgent need for global attention to Gaza’s water crisis and the broader humanitarian issues affecting the region.
