Millions of people in Pakistan face ongoing internet connectivity challenges, and global satellite operators are gearing up to offer solutions. With growing interest in satellite internet, international companies are now exploring opportunities to bring fast and reliable connectivity to the South Asian nation.
Some of the major players planning to enter Pakistan’s satellite communications market include OneWeb and Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology, alongside Starlink, which has already gained global popularity. These companies specialize in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, known for providing faster and more reliable internet compared to traditional high-orbit satellites.
However, regulatory delays have slowed progress. The Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board (PSARB), responsible for overseeing space-related activities, has yet to issue the necessary No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for these operators. Without these approvals, companies cannot officially launch their services in Pakistan.
Starlink has already made an impact globally with its high-speed satellite internet. Businesses in Pakistan, particularly IT firms, are using Starlink’s service to ensure uninterrupted communication with international clients. While the service is expensive—with business packages starting at around £750 per month—it offers unmatched speed and reliability, making it a worthwhile investment for many companies.
Interestingly, Starlink does not currently have an official presence in Pakistan. To access the service, local businesses subscribe to packages from abroad. Meanwhile, the government is working on a regulatory framework to allow LEO satellites to operate legally in Pakistan, which would make services like Starlink more accessible to the public.
Global operators like OneWeb and Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology have also expressed interest in launching their services. OneWeb, a pioneer in combining GEO and LEO satellite technology, could significantly improve internet connectivity across the country. Similarly, the Chinese company Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology has shown its intent to enter Pakistan’s market.
As regulatory discussions continue, it remains to be seen when these services will become widely available in Pakistan. For now, satellite internet offers a glimpse of hope for those struggling with connectivity issues, especially in remote and underserved areas.
The interest of global satellite providers highlights Pakistan’s potential as a key market for advanced internet services. Once regulatory hurdles are resolved, these companies could transform the digital landscape in a country of over 240 million people, offering faster, more reliable internet to businesses and households alike.
