In a shocking incident that has raised serious concerns about public safety, a senior doctor, Dr. Zulqernain Butt, has been arrested for allegedly opening fire on two school buses in the Cantonment area. The horrifying event unfolded on a busy Wednesday morning and has left many parents and citizens deeply shaken.
According to police, Dr. Butt, a Grade-19 senior anesthetist, was reportedly driving behind two school buses on Bedian Road near Waqas Market. The buses were on their usual morning routes to pick up children for school. When one bus slowed down to take a U-turn, the doctor, who was in his car, repeatedly tried to overtake them. During the process, his car accidentally collided with one of the buses.
What followed was an alarming escalation. Allegedly enraged by the collision, Dr. Butt took out a 9mm pistol and began firing. Fortunately, one of the buses targeted by the shots had no children on board, although a bullet struck one of its tires. The bus driver bravely tried to intervene, but the suspect fled the scene before he could be stopped.
After the shooting, reports indicate that Dr. Butt returned home, picked up his own children, dropped them off at their school, and then went to a private hospital on Ferozepur Road, where he works part-time. Law enforcement agencies were swiftly informed by the school management after the bus driver reported the incident. Senior police officials launched an immediate investigation, and within hours, the suspect was tracked down and arrested.
A search of the hospital where Dr. Butt works uncovered the firearm allegedly used in the incident. It was found in a locker, and police confirmed it matched the weapon involved in the shooting.
Authorities have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Dr. Butt on charges of terrorism and attempted murder. Police officials have also revealed that the suspect has a history of aggressive behavior and violent outbursts over minor disagreements, adding to the seriousness of the case.
This incident has not only highlighted the dangers of road rage but also raised questions about mental health and responsible gun ownership. Many parents and citizens are demanding stricter laws to ensure the safety of children and the public on the roads. Law enforcement agencies have assured the public of a thorough investigation, with promises to hold the suspect accountable.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on ensuring justice is served and implementing measures to prevent such incidents in the future. This tragedy has served as a wake-up call about the importance of managing anger and resolving conflicts without violence.
