A recent warning from the National Telecom and Information Technology Security Board (NTISB) in Pakistan highlights the dangers of using certain browser extensions that could put your personal data at serious risk.
The NTISB alert revealed that 16 browser extensions are unsafe for users. These extensions, including tools like AI Assistant – ChatGPT, Gemini for Chrome, VPNCity, Internxt VPN, and Vidniz Flex Video Recorder, may collect and leak sensitive data, such as social media credentials and banking information. This is a growing concern as many people unknowingly grant these extensions access to their personal data when they install them.
Free browser extensions, especially on popular platforms like Chrome and Firefox, often require extensive permissions to function. While this may seem harmless, these permissions can be exploited to collect user information. The risk is even higher with free VPN extensions, as they often contain malware or sell users’ personal data to third parties. A study revealed that 88% of free VPN services compromise user privacy, making it clear that free does not always mean safe.
In one alarming case, hackers managed to upload a malicious version of an extension, Cyberhaven, to the Chrome Web Store. This version affected millions of users, exposing their data to cybercriminals. Such incidents highlight the importance of being cautious when choosing browser extensions or any online tools.
To stay safe online, the NTISB recommends that users follow these tips:
- Only install extensions from trusted sources.
- Carefully review the permissions required by any extension. If the permissions seem excessive, reconsider using the extension.
- Regularly update extensions and remove those that are no longer needed.
- Avoid using free VPN services unless you have thoroughly researched their security measures and user privacy policies.
The rise in cybercrime makes it essential for everyone to prioritize their online safety. Always be vigilant about what you download or install on your browser, and never underestimate the risks of sharing your data with unverified services. By taking simple precautions, you can protect your sensitive information and avoid falling victim to cyber threats.
