The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced its Men’s T20I Team of the Year for 2024, and Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam is the only player from his country to make it to the prestigious lineup. Despite Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the T20I World Cup 2024, Babar’s remarkable batting skills secured his spot among the best players globally.
Babar Azam had an outstanding year in T20I cricket, featuring in 24 matches for Pakistan and amassing 738 runs at an average of 33.54. He delivered six half-centuries, with his highest score being an impressive 75. His consistency with the bat and ability to perform under pressure made him a standout player in the shorter format of the game.
The T20I Team of the Year is captained by India’s Rohit Sharma, who led his team to victory in the T20I World Cup 2024. Rohit had a stellar year, scoring 378 runs in just 11 matches at an average of 42 and a strike rate exceeding 160. His explosive innings of 92 against Australia in the Super Eight stage of the World Cup was one of the highlights of the tournament. Alongside Rohit, three other Indian players—Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Arshdeep Singh—also made it to the team.
The lineup reflects a blend of talent from across the cricketing world, including Australia’s Travis Head, England’s Phil Salt, Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza, Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, and Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga. Each of these players had exceptional performances throughout the year, contributing significantly to their teams’ successes.
The announcement of the T20I team followed the reveal of the ICC ODI Team of the Year, where three Pakistani players—Saim Ayub, Shaheen Afridi, and Haris Rauf—were included for their outstanding performances in the 50-over format.
While Pakistan’s T20I campaign in 2024 might not have met expectations, Babar Azam’s individual brilliance proved why he is considered one of the best batters in the world.
