Australia’s chances of fielding their best squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy have taken a big hit. The team’s captain, Pat Cummins, is facing a serious injury concern, with reports suggesting that he’s “highly unlikely” to recover in time. Cummins has been dealing with a long-standing ankle issue that worsened after his heavy workload during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The Aussie captain recently missed the Test series in Sri Lanka to be with his family for the birth of his second child, but his ankle problem has kept him from getting back to his full fitness. Despite trying to recover, Cummins hasn’t been able to bowl yet, making it seem almost impossible for him to play in the Champions Trophy.
Unfortunately, Cummins isn’t the only Australian player struggling with injuries ahead of the tournament. Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood is also battling to regain fitness in time for the event. Hazlewood’s condition is being closely monitored, and selectors are keeping their fingers crossed that he’ll be ready for the tournament.

If Cummins and Hazlewood are unavailable, Australia will need to make changes to their squad. Fast bowlers Sean Abbott and Spencer Johnson are being considered as replacements. Abbott, who missed out on the original Champions Trophy squad due to his inconsistent form in One Day Internationals, could now get another chance. Spencer Johnson, who is already set to travel with the team to Sri Lanka as a backup option, may be called into action too.
Another player who might join the squad is leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha. He has been sent to Sri Lanka for development, and there’s a chance he could feature in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. If Sangha performs well, he might travel with the team to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy.
With Cummins out of the picture, Australia will also need to decide on a new captain for the tournament. Head coach Andrew McDonald revealed that they have been having conversations with Steven Smith and Travis Head about the leadership role. Smith has led Australia in ODIs before, and McDonald praised his leadership in recent Test matches. However, the team is still weighing up which player will take the reins in Cummins’ absence.
As the squad for the Champions Trophy is being finalized, these injury updates and leadership decisions will play a huge role in shaping the team. Australia is also focused on their upcoming ODI series in Sri Lanka, which will serve as a crucial preparation for the global tournament. The team’s campaign in the Champions Trophy now faces significant challenges, but with key players like Smith and Head stepping up, Australia is hopeful of overcoming these hurdles.
