Pakistan’s interim head coach, Aqib Javed, has come forward to defend his players after their recent loss to New Zealand in the tri-nation series. Despite the defeat, he remains confident in the squad’s abilities and believes that a few setbacks do not define the team’s true potential.
Speaking at a press conference after the final in Karachi, Aqib Javed highlighted the importance of looking at the bigger picture. He emphasized that while some players handle pressure well, others might struggle occasionally, but that does not mean they lack talent. He pointed out that Babar Azam’s early dismissals in all three matches and Saim Ayub’s unfortunate injury had impacted the team’s strategy.
Javed also discussed how ODI cricket has evolved over time, particularly between the 11th and 40th overs, where teams need to maintain a balance between aggression and smart play. He urged the batsmen to take advantage of the four fielders outside the inner circle instead of playing unnecessary risky shots.
Regarding Babar Azam’s role as an opener, Javed dismissed any concerns, explaining that shifting a No. 3 batter to the opening position is not a drastic change. He believes that Babar has the skill to adapt, especially in overseas conditions where the ball moves more. Aqib expressed confidence that Babar is due for a big performance and will step up when the team needs him most.
With the tri-nation series now behind them, the Pakistan team is shifting its focus to preparing for the upcoming Champions Trophy. If they manage to perform well in the tournament, Aqib Javed could secure a long-term coaching role, losing the “interim” tag from his title.
The team remains optimistic, and with the right strategy and determination, Pakistan will be looking to make a strong comeback in the Champions Trophy. Fans are hopeful that the players will learn from their recent experiences and deliver outstanding performances on the global stage.
