An American woman, Onijah Andrew Robinson, has made headlines with an unusual demand for $100,000 from the Pakistani government in order to return to the United States. This request follows a series of events involving a young Pakistani man she met online, which led her to travel to Karachi, only to find herself stranded and in a difficult situation.
Onijah, who is originally from the United States, claims that she was deceived by Ahmad Nidal Memon, a 19-year-old man from Karachi, whom she met through social media. According to Onijah, she and Ahmad got married online through a ceremony in Utah, USA. Trusting him, Onijah left her husband and children behind and traveled to Pakistan on October 11 to be with Ahmad. However, when she arrived, his family rejected the relationship, leaving her in a vulnerable position with no way to return home.
The situation escalated when Onijah publicly demanded a sum of $100,000, saying that $20,000 of that amount should go to her personally, while the rest should be used to improve Karachi’s roads and cleanliness. She made this request during a joint press conference with Ramzan Chhipa, the head of the Chhipa Foundation, a well-known charitable organization in Karachi. Onijah’s unusual plea caught many by surprise, and the press conference was marked by tense moments, including a heated exchange where Onijah snapped at Chhipa, telling him to “keep quiet.”
In the midst of the situation, Ramzan Chhipa expressed his concern for Onijah’s well-being, stating that she was mentally unstable due to lack of sleep and stress. Chhipa intervened to help her, bringing her to the Chhipa Foundation’s headquarters for care. He also reassured the public that female volunteers from his organization would look after her.
The case has drawn significant attention, both in Pakistan and internationally. Many have questioned the validity of Onijah and Ahmad’s online marriage, and authorities are now investigating the matter. Ahmad, who has gone into hiding, has not spoken publicly about the situation, and his family continues to reject the claims made by Onijah.
Adding to the complexity of the case, Onijah staged a protest outside Ahmad’s home in Karachi after his family refused to accept her. She spent the night outside, determined to get Ahmad’s family to accept their relationship. However, her actions have only added to the controversy surrounding the case.
Things took another turn when Onijah was removed from a Qatar Airways flight at Karachi Airport for allegedly causing a disturbance and misbehaving with the airline staff. This incident led to intervention from the U.S. Consulate in Karachi, although they clarified that they could not force Onijah to return to the U.S. against her will, as it could have legal consequences for the U.S. government.
