The Sindh government is facing a serious issue as over 1.37 million metric tons of wheat, valued at Rs. 150 billion, remains stuck in warehouses. If not released soon, this massive stock could rot, leading to significant losses.
The wheat in storage includes stocks from the 2022-23 and 2024 harvests. The provincial Food Department has written to the Chief Minister, urging immediate action to release the stock before it deteriorates. Long-term storage can cause the wheat to spoil, making it unfit for consumption and resulting in a huge waste of resources.
Farmers are also demanding the immediate sale of the stored wheat. They argue that if the government keeps holding onto the old stock, it will disrupt the market for new harvests. This could lower prices and impact their earnings, causing financial difficulties for many in the agricultural sector.

Experts warn that the delay in releasing wheat stocks could create a supply chain crisis. If the stored wheat goes to waste, it may lead to shortages and higher prices for consumers. Additionally, corruption concerns have been raised, as reports suggest that hundreds of thousands of wheat bags have been stolen from government warehouses.
The situation calls for urgent action from the Sindh government. Releasing the wheat into the market would not only prevent losses but also stabilize prices and support farmers. Swift decision-making is needed to protect this essential food supply and ensure that the people of Sindh do not suffer from unnecessary price hikes or food shortages.
