The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has taken a big step toward energy efficiency by deciding to power both of its campuses with solar energy. This move will help the university save a significant amount on electricity bills while promoting the use of renewable energy.
This major decision was made during the 58th Board of Governors (BoG) meeting, which was led by Justice (Retd) Sheikh Ahmad Farooq. The plan is expected to bring long-term financial relief and sustainability to the university.
A Cost-Effective Solar Power Project
The total cost of the solar energy project is estimated at Rs. 75 million. However, the university expects to save Rs. 55 million every year in electricity expenses, making this a highly cost-effective decision. To support this initiative, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has allocated Rs. 20 million in funding.
By shifting to solar energy, UHS is not only reducing costs but also contributing to an environmentally friendly and sustainable future. With rising electricity prices, this transition will help the university manage its finances more efficiently while reducing its dependence on traditional energy sources.

University’s Reforms and Achievements
During the meeting, UHS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Ahsan Waheed Rathore presented the university’s annual performance report. He highlighted key reforms introduced over the past year, including improvements in examination processes and admissions.
One of the major achievements of the university was the smooth and transparent organization of the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT). The university has also implemented a merit-based admissions system for both public and private medical colleges, ensuring fair opportunities for all students.
A Step Towards a Greener Future
The decision to transition to solar energy reflects UHS’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. With significant financial savings and reduced environmental impact, this move sets an example for other educational institutions to follow. By investing in solar power, UHS is not only securing its future but also contributing to the country’s energy conservation efforts.
This initiative marks a major milestone for the University of Health Sciences and highlights its dedication to both academic excellence and environmental responsibility.
