Mari Energies Limited (PSX: MARI) has announced a significant discovery of gas and condensate in the North Waziristan District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The discovery was made at the Spinwam-1 exploration well, which is part of the Waziristan Block. This is an exciting development for Pakistan’s energy sector, as it opens up new possibilities for natural gas production in the region.
Mari Energies is the main operator of the Waziristan Block, holding a 55% working interest. The company is working in partnership with Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), which owns 35%, and Orient Petroleum Inc., which holds a 10% share. This collaboration is expected to boost energy exploration efforts in the country.
The Spinwam-1 well is the second exploratory well drilled in the Waziristan Block. It was spud-in on May 28, 2024, and drilled to a total depth of 4,400 meters. Initial well testing has already shown promising results. Before applying acid treatment, the Samanasuk Formation has demonstrated a gas flow of 12.96 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) and approximately 20 barrels per day of condensate. These results were achieved with a 32/64” choke and a wellhead flowing pressure of 2,127 pounds per square inch gauge (psig).

Further assessments are currently underway. Post-acid testing and evaluations of additional formations will help determine the full potential of the well. If the well continues to show strong production capacity, it could significantly contribute to Pakistan’s energy supply and reduce the country’s reliance on imported fuels.
This discovery is a major breakthrough, as it opens up new exploration opportunities within the Waziristan Block. With further testing and development, this gas find could lead to increased domestic energy production, benefiting both industries and consumers across the country.
The discovery highlights the importance of continued investment in Pakistan’s energy sector. As companies like Mari Energies and its partners expand exploration activities, the country moves closer to energy self-sufficiency. The development of such natural resources will not only strengthen the local economy but also ensure a stable energy supply for the future.
