Murree is set to undergo major development as authorities approve three major projects: a new Judicial Complex, the remodeling of Jhika Gali Bazaar and Chowk, and the expansion of Murree Kachehri Chowk. While these projects aim to improve infrastructure, they have raised concerns among locals about displacement and the preservation of historical sites.
The most talked-about project is the Judicial Complex, which will be built at Jhika Gali on the site of MC High School, a school that has been in existence since 1924. The school’s land has already been transferred to the judiciary, and the construction is expected to cost Rs 500 million. However, this decision has sparked strong reactions from the community, as nearly 200 students currently study there. Locals, including social worker Raja Iqbal Kathwal, argue that the authorities should consider alternative land instead of disrupting students’ education.
Another major project is the remodeling of Jhika Gali Bazaar and Chowk, which is estimated to cost Rs 108.86 million. This project involves acquiring around 10 kanals of land to create a green space and a dual carriageway connecting the Chowk with the motorway. Around 40 shops will be demolished, but the administration has promised to provide alternative shops to affected shopkeepers along Murree Expressway. However, residents are worried, as notices have been sent to 1,600 households, raising fears of displacement. Many locals, including Raja Iqbal Kathwal, have warned of strong protests if their concerns are not addressed.

The most expensive project is the expansion of Murree Kachehri Chowk, costing an estimated Rs 1.683 billion. This expansion is intended to improve traffic flow but has triggered concerns about forced evacuations and the loss of ancestral properties. Many traders and residents have expressed their refusal to sell their lands, with local leaders like Kamran Abbasi and Dr. Ashfaq calling for the withdrawal of Section 4, which allows the government to acquire land.
Despite the controversy, Murree Deputy Commissioner Zahid Shirazi has assured residents that the administration will provide fair compensation and relocation support. He emphasized that these projects align with the chief minister’s vision for Murree’s development and will ultimately benefit the region.
While these projects promise to enhance Murree’s infrastructure, they also highlight the importance of balancing modernization with the preservation of historical sites and community well-being. To prevent further unrest, authorities must ensure transparent communication and fair solutions for all affected individuals.
