The National Highways and Motorways Police (NH&MP) has introduced new toll rates for vehicles that do not have an M-Tag, and this will come into effect from February 1, 2025. If you are a driver without an M-Tag or with an insufficient balance on your existing tag, you will now have to pay an additional 25% surcharge on your regular toll fee. The minimum surcharge amount has been set at Rs50.
To avoid this extra charge, authorities are encouraging drivers to get their M-Tags before the deadline of January 31, 2025. The best part? The M-Tags are being offered for free, making it an easy way to save money and time while driving on the motorways. This initiative is part of the government’s move to create a more digital and efficient toll collection system, which will help reduce traffic congestion at toll plazas.
As part of a bigger plan to go fully digital, the National Highways Authority (NHA) has also explained that these toll changes will make the system smoother, more efficient, and environmentally friendly. By shifting to digital tolling, the need for cash transactions will decrease, and overall traffic flow will improve, helping to make travel more hassle-free.
For those who are still unsure about getting an M-Tag, it’s important to know that there are some additional requirements. To get your M-Tag, you will need to present a valid fitness certificate for your vehicle, along with your registration book and driving license. This is all part of a larger effort to improve air quality, especially in Punjab, where smog levels have been very high.
Alongside the M-Tag changes, there are new rules about which vehicles can use the motorways. Vehicles that are older than 30 years will not be allowed to use the motorways between October and January. This measure is aimed at reducing pollution during the peak smog season, and it’s a step toward a greener, more sustainable transport system.
The NH&MP is hopeful that these changes will not only help streamline the toll process but also enhance safety on the roads, reduce environmental harm, and make traveling smoother for everyone. So, make sure to follow the new rules to avoid extra charges and keep your journey easy and stress-free.
