In an exciting step towards eco-friendly transportation, Punjab’s Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz, has officially launched an electric bus service in Lahore. The launch, held on Friday, marks a significant shift towards cleaner and more efficient public transportation in the city.
The new electric buses are part of a pilot project designed to provide a sustainable and modern alternative to traditional buses. During the launch event, Transport Minister Bilal Akbar shared key details about the innovative service. These buses are equipped with several advanced features to enhance the travel experience for passengers.
One of the standout features of the electric buses is the inclusion of GPS tracking. This allows passengers to easily track the buses in real time, ensuring they can plan their journeys efficiently. Additionally, the buses are equipped with Wi-Fi and USB charging ports, making it easier for commuters to stay connected during their travel. For those with special needs, the buses have designated seating for differently-abled passengers, ensuring that everyone can enjoy a comfortable ride.
The electric buses are designed with safety and convenience in mind. The floors are equipped with anti-slip sheets, ensuring passenger safety, while the seating capacity of each bus is 30, with the ability to accommodate up to 80 passengers at a time. This makes the service ideal for daily commuters, students, and families alike.
In order to support this new initiative, nine charging stations have been set up at the Green Town Hamdard Chowk depot. These stations will ensure that the buses remain fully charged and ready for operation. Each bus has an impressive range of 250 kilometers on a single charge, allowing it to complete up to four full routes before needing to recharge.
The electric buses will operate on a 21-kilometer route, starting from the railway station and passing through several key areas including Queens Road, Mozang, Ferozepur Road, and PU Campus Bridge. This route has been carefully selected to connect major parts of the city, making it easier for people to travel to and from work, school, and other important locations.
Security is a top priority, and the buses are equipped with CCTV cameras to ensure the safety and well-being of passengers. This added security measure aims to prevent harassment incidents and provide peace of mind for commuters.
The full-scale launch of the electric bus service is expected by mid-February, with 42 bus shelters currently under construction along the route. These shelters will provide passengers with a comfortable place to wait for their buses. Buses will arrive every nine minutes, ensuring that commuters don’t have to wait long for their ride.
To make payments more convenient, passengers will be able to pay fares using digital wallets, cards, and universal transport cards. This digital payment system will help reduce the need for cash transactions, making the service more efficient and modern. Furthermore, a mobile app will be introduced to allow passengers to track their buses in real time, providing greater convenience and transparency.
This electric bus service is a promising step towards a cleaner and greener Lahore. Not only does it offer an eco-friendly solution to public transportation, but it also enhances the travel experience for all passengers with its modern features and improved convenience. As the city moves forward with this innovative project, it sets a strong example for other cities to follow in adopting sustainable and efficient public transport systems.
