The Punjab government has installed 30 real-time Air Quality Monitoring Stations (AQMS) across the province, including Lahore, to track pollution levels and take effective steps for cleaner air. This is a major move to fight air pollution and protect public health.
A Major Initiative for Cleaner Air:
The Environment Protection and Climate Change Department (EP&CCD) has launched this project under the Punjab Green Development Program (PGDP), which is supported by the World Bank. The real-time data from these stations will help in making strong policies to reduce pollution and improve air quality across Punjab.
Lahore Leads with Advanced Monitoring:
Lahore, which often struggles with high pollution levels, now has five mobile air quality monitoring units and eight fixed stations. Other major cities such as Faisalabad, Multan, Rawalpindi, Bahawalpur, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Sargodha, and Dera Ghazi Khan have also received monitoring stations.
What These Stations Monitor:
The AQMS will provide hourly updates on harmful pollutants, including:
- PM2.5 & PM10 (fine dust particles harmful to lungs)
- Carbon Monoxide (CO)
- Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)
- Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2)
- Ozone (O3)
These stations will also track weather conditions to better understand pollution patterns and take necessary actions.
Government’s Commitment to a Cleaner Punjab:
To tackle the growing pollution problem, the Punjab government introduced the Climate Resilient Punjab Vision and Action Plan last year. The installation of AQMS is a major part of this strategy.
Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb highlighted that this initiative will help improve environmental policies and make Punjab a healthier place to live. The collected data will allow authorities to take specific measures to control pollution and protect citizens from harmful air quality.
