The Punjab government is making great strides with its innovative “Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar” program, which is helping thousands of families achieve their dream of owning a home. More than 5,000 homes are nearing completion under this initiative, bringing hope to many across the province. This program is a game-changer, offering affordable home loans to low-income families who may have never thought owning a home was possible.
Led by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the government has emphasized that the loans are being provided based on merit, ensuring fairness and transparency in the distribution process. This initiative is also one of the first major interest-free housing programs in Pakistan’s history, a significant step toward making homeownership accessible to a larger portion of the population.
So far, the second phase of the program has already seen over 3,000 people receive loans, with homes being constructed in both rural and urban areas. The loan amount for eligible families can go up to Rs 1.5 million, making it possible for them to build their homes without worrying about exorbitant interest rates. The best part? The repayment is manageable, with borrowers only needing to pay the principal amount in easy installments of just Rs 14,000 per month over nine years. This system ensures that repayments are affordable and don’t become a financial burden.
The “Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar” scheme offers specific plans depending on the area. In rural areas, loans of up to Rs 1.5 million are provided for houses as large as 10 marlas. For urban areas, the maximum loan amount remains the same, but the houses are typically 5 marlas. For people in major cities, the Punjab government is building four-story flats on government land, which will be allocated through a lottery system, ensuring a fair chance for all applicants.
The program also supports private housing schemes, where homes ranging from 3 to 5 marlas are offered. In these cases, the government is providing a subsidy of up to Rs 1 million to make the houses more affordable.
The response to the program has been overwhelming, with around 500,000 applications received, reflecting the high demand for affordable housing in Punjab. This scheme represents a significant effort by the government to make homeownership more accessible to the less fortunate, fulfilling the dreams of countless families.
Since the launch of this initiative, the Punjab government has distributed cheques to eligible families to kickstart the construction of their homes. At the cheque distribution ceremony, both Maryam Nawaz and her father, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, emphasized the importance of the program, calling it a step toward fulfilling the dream of providing homes to those in need.
