
England’s Richard Illingworth has been honored with the prestigious title of ICC Umpire of the Year 2024. This remarkable recognition came during the ICC Awards 2024, celebrating his excellence in cricket officiating.
Richard Illingworth, a former England cricketer, began his umpiring journey in 2005. Initially, he officiated in women’s cricket matches before stepping into men’s cricket in 2010. His career as an umpire has been nothing short of exceptional, leading to his inclusion in the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires in 2013. Since then, Illingworth has become a prominent name in international cricket, officiating several key matches, including some of the most thrilling World Cup games.
The 2024 ICC Awards marked the fourth time Richard Illingworth lifted The David Shepherd Trophy, an award named in honor of the legendary English umpire David Shepherd. Illingworth previously won this accolade in 2019, 2022, and 2023. His consistency and dedication to his role as an umpire have cemented his legacy in cricket history.
Some of his most memorable moments as an umpire include officiating high-profile games such as the ODI World Cup 2019 semi-final between India and New Zealand, the ODI World Cup 2023 final between India and Australia, and the T20 World Cup 2024 final between India and South Africa. These matches showcased his ability to perform under pressure and deliver decisions with precision, earning him immense respect in the cricketing world.
Richard Illingworth’s journey began as a player, representing England in nine Test matches, where he picked up 19 wickets. He also played in 25 ODIs, claiming 30 wickets and scoring 68 runs. After retiring from international cricket, he transitioned into umpiring and has since officiated in 74 Test matches, 93 ODIs, and 35 T20Is.

It’s worth mentioning that Australia’s Simon Taufel remains the most decorated umpire with five consecutive David Shepherd Trophy wins from 2004 to 2008. Pakistan’s Aleem Dar also made history by winning the award three times in a row from 2009 to 2011.
