In a significant development following the Gaza ceasefire agreement, Israel has freed 200 Palestinian prisoners. This step comes after Hamas, the Palestinian resistance group, released four Israeli female soldiers as part of a deal. The ceasefire has brought an end to more than 15 months of intense conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The International Red Cross confirmed that 128 Palestinian prisoners were transferred to Gaza and the West Bank, while the rest were moved by local authorities. This prisoner exchange marks the second phase of the agreement, which involved the release of prisoners from both sides.
As part of the deal, Israel released 200 Palestinian detainees. Among them, 114 prisoners were sent to the West Bank, 70 were moved to Egypt, and 16 were sent to Khan Younis, a town in Gaza. The news was met with excitement as large crowds of Palestinians gathered in Gaza City’s Palestine Square to welcome the released prisoners. Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad fighters were present at the event to show their support.
Before the release, the four Israeli women – Karina Erivo, Daniela Gilboa, Naama Levy, and Liri Al-Bagh – were brought onto a stage where they waved to the crowd and smiled. Afterward, they were transferred in vehicles, likely under pressure, to be handed over to Israeli forces.
This exchange of prisoners and the ceasefire agreement signify a major step towards peace, though the situation remains complex. The resolution of this conflict offers hope for further diplomatic breakthroughs, but the path ahead is still filled with challenges. The news of the prisoners’ release has sparked celebrations among Palestinians, with many expressing their hopes for long-lasting peace.
