A recent case of monkeypox has been confirmed in Pakistan, marking the first one of the year. The patient, who had traveled from Dubai, arrived at Peshawar on January 24, 2025. During routine screening at the Peshawar airport, health authorities identified a suspicious case and decided to conduct a test. The results came back positive for monkeypox, making this the 10th reported case in the country.
The patient has been promptly transferred to the Services Hospital in Peshawar for further treatment. Health officials are closely monitoring the situation to ensure that the virus does not spread further. The individual traveled from one of the Gulf countries, which is where they most likely contracted the virus. Health authorities are taking every necessary step to prevent the spread of the virus within the local population.
In response to the increasing global concern about monkeypox, the World Health Organization (WHO) has approved the emergency use of the ‘Mpox vaccine,’ developed by a Japanese company named ‘KM Biologics.’ The vaccine, which has already undergone successful trials in Japan, is now part of the global strategy to combat the virus. The WHO had earlier declared monkeypox a global health emergency in August 2022, due to the spread of a new strain, Clade IB, originating in the Republic of Congo. This development has raised concerns across neighboring countries, but with the new vaccine and preventive measures in place, experts hope to control the spread more effectively.
In light of this new case, Pakistani health authorities are on high alert and taking additional precautions. They are working with international health organizations to monitor and respond to any new developments in the spread of monkeypox. The Pakistani government is emphasizing the importance of vigilant screening at airports and other points of entry to protect the public from potential exposure.
Monkeypox, which was previously a rare disease, has been making headlines worldwide due to an increase in cases over the past few years. The virus is known to cause symptoms such as fever, body aches, and distinctive rashes, and while it is not as deadly as other diseases, it can still cause significant health problems. Health officials are advising travelers to be cautious and take necessary health precautions, especially when traveling to regions where the virus is more common.
