Bangkok, the bustling capital of Thailand, is taking a big step to tackle its severe smog problem. For one week, starting January 25, 2025, all public transport in the city will be free. This move is aimed at reducing the thick layer of smog that has been troubling the city for days and causing difficulties for its residents.
The decision, announced by Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, includes free rides on buses and electric train lines. The government believes that by making public transport free, fewer people will use private cars, which are a major contributor to air pollution. Officials hope this measure will reduce car usage by 20% to 30%, making a noticeable difference in the city’s air quality.
To further address the smog issue, the prime minister has also ordered artificial rain operations and stricter measures to cut down on smoke and dust emissions. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport Suriya Juangroongruangkit assured the public that the government will financially support both private and state-owned transport operators during this initiative.
Bangkok, a world-famous tourist destination, has been grappling with worsening air pollution. The situation has forced the closure of many schools, and businesses have encouraged employees to work from home to avoid exposure to the harmful air. The announcement of free public transport comes as the city prepares to welcome thousands of tourists for the Lunar New Year celebrations.
Although the government is hopeful about the positive impact of this initiative, opposition parties have criticized Prime Minister Shinawatra for not addressing the smog problem sooner.
