Pakistan’s cricket team is all set to face the West Indies in a two-match Test series starting on January 17, 2025. After an exciting ODI series victory over South Africa, the focus now shifts to the Test matches, which will be Pakistan’s final assignment in the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. While the team is preparing for the challenge, all eyes will be on the star player, Babar Azam.
Babar Azam has been a consistent performer for Pakistan, and in the upcoming series, he has a chance to break one of the major cricketing records held by Imran Khan, one of Pakistan’s greatest cricketers. Imran Khan, the legendary former Pakistan captain, is currently the fifth-highest run-scorer for Pakistan against the West Indies. He has accumulated 1,977 runs in his career against the West Indies. Babar Azam, on the other hand, has scored 1,676 runs against the West Indies across all formats. Babar needs just 302 more runs to surpass Imran Khan and take his place as one of the top run-scorers for Pakistan against the West Indies.
This upcoming series against the West Indies offers Babar Azam a golden opportunity to achieve this feat. In addition to the run tally, Babar Azam is also tied with Imran Khan for the number of half-centuries scored against the West Indies. Both players have scored 11 half-centuries each. If Babar scores just one more half-century in this series, he will surpass Imran Khan in this category as well. This would add to the growing list of records that Babar Azam continues to break with every series.
Babar Azam has been in excellent form lately, especially during Pakistan’s recent series against South Africa. After facing some criticism for not scoring big in home Test matches, Babar Azam came back strongly with vital contributions in the South Africa series. He scored 193 runs in total, including three half-centuries. His average of 48.25 during the South Africa series shows his growing consistency, and he will be key to Pakistan’s success in the upcoming Test series against the West Indies.
It’s not the first time Babar Azam has broken one of Imran Khan’s records. Back in 2022, Babar surpassed a long-standing record held by Imran Khan for the most runs in an individual innings against Australia. Imran Khan had set the record in 1990, scoring 82 runs in a match against Australia in Brisbane. This record stood for many years until Babar Azam broke it with a spectacular knock of 114 runs off 83 balls during his innings against Australia.
Babar Azam’s consistency and ability to perform under pressure have made him a key player for Pakistan in all formats of the game. His records and achievements are a testament to his skill and determination, and he is quickly becoming one of the best players in world cricket. As he looks to break Imran Khan’s record in the upcoming series, cricket fans around the world will be watching closely to see if Babar can add yet another feather to his cap.
