The Punjab government has announced a new speed limit for motorcycles, setting it at 60 kilometers per hour. This decision aims to reduce road accidents caused by speeding and ensure the safety of riders and pedestrians alike.
Azma Bukhari, Punjab’s Information Minister, shared her concerns about the growing number of accidents on roads across the province. She stressed that many lives are lost due to reckless speeding, which has become a major issue. “We cannot afford to lose more lives because of carelessness on the roads,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of strict measures to curb this trend.
The government is determined to enforce this new speed limit and will implement strict monitoring to ensure compliance. Motorcyclists caught exceeding the limit will face penalties. Authorities believe that these actions will play a significant role in making roads safer for everyone.
This move follows a similar initiative in Islamabad, where the traffic police recently revised speed limits for various vehicles. For example, major roads such as the Kashmir Highway and Islamabad Highway now allow light vehicles to travel at 80 km/h, while heavy transport vehicles are limited to 65 km/h. Other roads, including Constitution Avenue and Jinnah Avenue, have set limits of 70 km/h for light vehicles and 65 km/h for heavy ones.
In certain areas like Lehtrar Road, the speed limit is restricted to 40 km/h for all vehicles, while Kahuta Road and I.J.P. Road have a limit of 60 km/h. Service roads also have specific restrictions, with 60 km/h for regular lanes and 40 km/h for single lanes. Additionally, areas near schools and hospitals are set at a strict limit of 30 km/h to ensure maximum safety.
By introducing these changes, the Punjab government hopes to significantly reduce accidents and create a culture of safer driving. This step, though simple, could save countless lives and make traveling in the province safer for everyone.
