Saudi Arabia has announced new health protocols for Umrah pilgrims in 2025, making vaccinations mandatory to protect the health of millions visiting the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. This step ensures that the pilgrimage remains a safe experience for everyone.
Pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia must now receive vaccinations against several diseases, including meningococcal meningitis, polio, yellow fever, COVID-19, and seasonal influenza. The Saudi Civil Aviation Authority has confirmed these requirements as part of efforts to enhance public health during the pilgrimage.
Travelers from countries where polio is still present, such as Pakistan, Nigeria, and Afghanistan, will need a polio vaccine. Additionally, those arriving from regions like Angola, Nigeria, Brazil, and Congo must be vaccinated against yellow fever. To further promote health and safety, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommendations for COVID-19 and flu vaccinations have been made compulsory. Pilgrims are also encouraged to complete vaccinations for tetanus, measles, and other diseases before traveling.
Authorities require all visitors to carry their vaccination certificates throughout their journey. Pilgrims with chronic health conditions are advised to bring detailed medical documents and sufficient medication in its original packaging. These measures ensure that travelers can manage their health effectively while performing religious duties.
To prevent mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue and Zika virus, pilgrims are encouraged to wear protective clothing and use insect repellents containing DEET, IR3535, or Icaridin. These precautions will help reduce the risk of infections during the pilgrimage.
The Saudi government continues to prioritize the well-being of pilgrims by introducing robust measures. These include a new agreement signed between the Saudi Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Dr. Tawfiq bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah, and Pakistan’s Minister for Religious Affairs, Chaudhry Salik Hussain. Under this agreement, 179,210 Pakistani pilgrims will perform Hajj in 2025, with special arrangements for accommodation and facilities in Mina at reduced rates.
Pakistani pilgrims will also have the option of staying in Madinah for 4 to 8 days, enjoying added convenience during their visit. Each pilgrim will receive a custom-designed bag that includes a Pakistani flag, a QR code for easy identification, and other useful information.
To simplify the pilgrimage process, a mobile app will be available to provide essential details directly to pilgrims’ smartphones. The app aims to enhance convenience and ensure pilgrims have all the necessary information at their fingertips.
Saudi Arabia’s commitment to the safety and comfort of pilgrims underscores its dedication to hosting millions of worshippers every year. With these measures, the country aims to make the Umrah experience safer and more fulfilling for everyone.
