China has taken a big step forward in the electric vehicle (EV) and renewable energy sectors by becoming the second-largest holder of lithium reserves worldwide. With its total lithium resources now reaching 30 million tons, China has strengthened its position in the global race for battery materials.
Recent discoveries and advanced mining technologies have helped China increase its share of global lithium reserves from 6% to 16.5%, putting it ahead of major producers like Australia, Argentina, and Bolivia. Only Chile holds more lithium than China.
One of the most significant discoveries comes from Tibet, where a vast 1,740-mile spodumene belt is estimated to hold more than 6.5 million tons of lithium. Experts predict the total reserves in this region could reach up to 30 million tons. Additionally, salt lakes on the Tibetan Plateau contain over 14 million tons of lithium, making it one of the largest deposits of its kind.
China has also made remarkable progress in lithium extraction technology. Researchers have developed new methods to process lepidolite, a mineral that was previously difficult and costly to extract. This breakthrough is expected to unlock an additional 10 million tons of lithium in Jiangxi Province, with more potential in regions like Hunan and Inner Mongolia.
These discoveries come at a crucial time as the demand for EV batteries and renewable energy continues to rise. In 2022, China produced 76% of the world’s lithium-ion batteries, and its growing lithium reserves are expected to lower production costs by reducing reliance on imports.
China is also making big moves abroad. In Mali, the country is working on developing one of the world’s largest untapped lithium deposits. Plans are in place to produce 506,000 tons of lithium annually, with ambitions to double output in the future despite local challenges.
By boosting domestic reserves and investing in global resources, China is helping ease the global lithium shortage. These efforts are likely to create a more stable market and support the rapid growth of EVs and renewable energy solutions worldwide.
