Good news has arrived for internet users in Pakistan who are struggling with slow internet speeds. A new project, called the Africa-2 Cable Project, has been launched to significantly improve internet speeds across the country. This project is expected to provide a faster, more reliable internet experience for millions of users in Pakistan.
The Africa-2 Cable Project is one of the largest underwater cable networks in the world. It spans an impressive 45,000 kilometers and connects 33 countries with 46 landing stations. Pakistan’s landing points for the Africa-2 Cable will be at Hawksbay and Keamari Town in Karachi. This means that Pakistan will be able to tap into this high-speed global network, which will drastically enhance the quality of internet services in the country.
The project is a part of Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to develop and improve its telecom and IT sector. The government has been working hard to overcome the internet connectivity issues faced by users in many areas. With this project, users can expect faster download speeds, smoother video streaming, and an overall better online experience.
In terms of growth, the telecom sector in Pakistan has been doing well. From 2022 to 2023, telecom revenues grew by 17%. In 2023-2024, the telecom revenue in Pakistan reached a whopping 955 billion rupees. This indicates a positive trend in the country’s digital economy. The addition of the Africa-2 Cable will further strengthen the sector and contribute to Pakistan’s economy, which saw telecom’s contribution rise to 335 billion rupees in 2024.
Pakistan’s telecom services now cover 91% of the population, and 81% of people have access to 4G services. This improvement in connectivity is making a significant difference in people’s lives. More homes now have access to the internet, with a 20% increase in internet coverage. This has led to better digital literacy and more opportunities for economic growth.
Thanks to this project and other government initiatives, Pakistan is now among the 37 countries that have established a WebTrust-certified National Public Infrastructure. This is a big step forward in ensuring that the country’s digital infrastructure is secure and reliable.
