The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the ratings for the pitches used in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy between Australia and India. The series saw Australia reclaim the trophy after a 3-1 victory, with one match ending in a draw.
According to the ICC, the pitches at Perth Stadium, Adelaide Oval, Gabba, and the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) were rated as “very good.” However, the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) received a “satisfactory” rating. The SCG pitch faced heavy criticism from players and experts for being unsuitable for Test cricket due to its thick grass covering.
The final match of the series, played at the SCG, lasted less than three days, raising concerns about the quality of the surface. Only 191 overs were bowled, and 15 wickets fell on the second day. The game saw a total of 685 runs scored, highlighting the challenges batters faced on the difficult pitch.
Despite the criticism of the SCG, Cricket Australia’s Head of Cricket Operations, Peter Roach, expressed satisfaction with the overall quality of pitches during the series. He emphasized that Australian cricket values pitches that reflect the unique characteristics of each venue, which he believes is a key factor in the popularity of Test cricket in the country.
This series marked a significant achievement for Australia, as they won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in a decade, securing their triumph in the final match at the SCG. The varying pitch conditions added an extra layer of challenge, showcasing the diversity of Australian cricket venues.
The ICC’s pitch ratings aim to maintain high standards in international cricket while ensuring fair and competitive games. The feedback highlights the importance of balancing local conditions with the needs of the modern game, keeping fans engaged and the spirit of Test cricket alive.
