The first section of the much-anticipated Malir Expressway in Karachi is almost ready to open for public use, according to Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah. The CM, while leading a meeting about the project, shared that the first 9-kilometer stretch of the expressway has been completed and could be opened as early as January 11 or 12, 2025.
The meeting included several key officials, such as Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, and Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah. They discussed the progress of the expressway and the steps needed to ensure smooth operations once it opens.
The Malir Expressway is expected to become a vital link for Karachi’s transportation network. The first phase, stretching from the Jam Sadiq Bridge to the Shah Faisal Interchange, is ready. Murad Ali Shah has also directed that other parts of the project, like the Quaidabad Interchange, should be finished in the next two months. Additionally, improvements are required for the Shah Faisal Interchange leading to Airport Road.
The expressway will have toll booths at 18 locations. The toll for cars will be Rs. 100, while buses will pay Rs. 200. To ensure safety, the government will deploy 7 to 8 police patrol vehicles along the route. Emergency services like ambulances and fire brigades will also be stationed at key points.
Murad Ali Shah emphasized the importance of security and efficient management. He ordered that the areas along the expressway under the jurisdiction of five police stations must maintain a secure environment for travelers. To make toll collection more efficient, automated systems will be introduced.
The CM has also been actively monitoring the progress of the expressway. Recently, he conducted a surprise inspection of the first section. During this visit, he directed engineers to speed up the work and strictly ordered the removal of illegal structures and parked vehicles along the route.
