A Pakistani man, Asif Bashir, has made headlines worldwide for his incredible act of courage and kindness during Hajj 2024. He has been nominated for one of India’s highest civilian honors for saving the lives of 44 people during a dangerous situation at Mina, where pilgrims were suffering from extreme heat. Among the 44 lives he saved, 24 were Indian nationals. Asif’s bravery is a shining example of selflessness and humanity.
The event took place in Mina, Saudi Arabia, during the Hajj pilgrimage, a time when millions of Muslims gather to perform religious rituals. The heat was unbearable, and many pilgrims found themselves in danger due to dehydration and exhaustion. Despite the challenging conditions, Asif did not hesitate. He sprang into action to rescue those in need, physically carrying some of the pilgrims to safety. His actions prevented what could have been a much worse disaster.
Asif’s efforts have been widely recognized, not only in Pakistan but also internationally. The Indian government has acknowledged his bravery and decided to nominate him for a prestigious civil award. This recognition is set to be officially given to Asif Bashir on January 26, 2025, in India, for his life-saving actions.
The news of Asif’s heroic deed has reached the highest levels of government in Pakistan. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, upon learning of Asif’s incredible act of bravery, has ordered a full inquiry into the situation. He wants to understand the circumstances surrounding the rescue operation and learn more about the international recognition Asif has received. According to an official letter issued by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatimi, Prime Minister Sharif has also asked the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Foreign Office to investigate whether officials from the Pakistani Embassy in Riyadh or the Consulate General in Jeddah were aware of Asif’s heroic actions.
In addition to the investigation, the Prime Minister has expressed a strong desire to honor Asif Bashir’s bravery and humanitarian work before he receives the Indian award. The Pakistani government is considering formal recognition for Asif, who has become a symbol of heroism.
